Quoddy Ecosystem Initiative
The Quoddy Ecosystem Initiative focuses on the entire Quoddy Region with particular emphasis the monitoring, remediation, and evaluation of the marine and river ecosystems. Current targets are:
1. St. Stephen Waterfront - Elevated E.coli levels persist. Efforts are being made to engage the Town of St. Stephen in removing sewage from numerous storm drains emptying into the St. Croix River.
2. Dennis Stream - During field surveys, potentially serious problems were observed at the St. Stephen water reservoir. Visits will be made to see if these problems have been addressed.
3. Annual Monitoring - The annual monitoring program will be continued in 2008. Sites will include standard sites located between St. Stephen and St. Andrews. Follow up will occur at St. Stephen and Dennis Stream. The Bayside Quarry is a new site of concern. A preliminary underwater survey and supporting aerial photographs suggest sediments from quarry operations are impacting the bottom in an area known for its lobster and scallops.
4. The Air We Breath. The latest data from EPS and Environment Canada show now substantial reduction in the air pollution being emitted from plants in Baileyville and St. Stephen
5. The Quoddy Ecosystem - Surveys will begin to duplicate the Resource Inventories conducted in the 1970's. work will follow the model of the Health of the St. Croix Estuary, 1604 -2004 which serves as the foundation of ongoing work in the Estuary. This new initiative will target Passamaquoddy Bay and West Isles.
Quoddy Community Initiative
1. Scoodic River Revival - Working to eliminate pollution and reestablish forage species, fish runs, and fishing in the St. Croix Estuary and Passamaquoddy Bay
2. The Roosevelt International Trail - Building an international trails around Passamaquoddy Bay.
3. The Quoddy Futures Co-operative - Working together to establish sustainable businesses in the Quoddy Region.
4. Community Outreach - Lectures and courses.
